bad clusters on maxtor drive

Hi

I have a new maxtor 160GB drive (3 months)
I ran disk check on it and it hanged with bad clusters in different
files.
When I rebooted all directories were gone and explorer gave the disk
not formatted massage.
How can I map the bad clusters and rebuild dir info to save some of the
files?

Smart move not backing the data up.

Thats not going to help with getting your data back.

Easy Recovery Pro might be able to get some stuff back.

Its not free.

And needs to be installed on a different drive too.

Is there another utility which can rebuild or remap on the damaged
drive?

Why did windows disk check hang? is there a better tool for disk check?

WHat is cause of bad clusters? windows xp or the drive is defective?

It is far too expensive to recover the data. Do a warranty replacement and
learn to backup. I have a back up program. My favorite is buying a second
hard disk and making a copy weekly. And no critical data is on the computer
hd.

Yes, stuff like Easy Recovery Pro.

Its a lot harder with significant numbers of bad sectors and
bad sectors which are right in the directory structures tho.
Why did windows disk check hang?

Likely because of the bad sectors.

Its better to have what you care about backed up properly.
WHat is cause of bad clusters?

Usually the hard drive is dying. Not always tho, it
can be due to a bad power supply too or even
just severe overheating of the drive.
windows xp
Nope.

or the drive is defective?

Usually, but not always.

Your data is likely gone. Restore it from backup to a healthy drive.
As to this drive, unless it was mishandled (i.e. run without adequate
cooling, Maxtors are very sensitiove to that), it is a case for warranty
replacement.

what do you mean proper cooling?

The same computer had an older Wstern Digital 40GB and a newer 120 GB
WD which work perfectly in the same conditions.
I do not know or was given by maxtor special instructions about
cooling.

The manufacturer specifies that the drive may not exceed 55C
at any time. That measn it must run significantly cooler when not
under load or under light load, say below 40C.

Maxtor publishes a technical manual of the drive. That is all they
need to do. It iss your obligation to find and read it, at least for
an experts only product like a bare drive. Why do people expect to be
told everything? If you use some technology then it is _your_
responsibility to understand how it works.

By now it is well knowen, at least in this newsgroup, that Maxtor
drives have a tendency to overheat. From personal observations that is
because they draw more power than comparable drives. While they are
reliable when running cool, they show the kind of failure mode you
observed when running too hot for longer times.
