XP home.
My CD - Dell upgrade from ME does not have NTBACKUP file.
Can it be downloaded from somewhere?
Or could you recommend any freeware backup program instead?
Thanks

Hi and a most useful response with lots of good info.
I have downloaded the NT Backup, having anticipated my Dell will not have a
CD copy. Additionally, I downloaded and installed the Enhanced Windows
Backup. Looks good, but I cannot find mention of being able to backup to a
CD?!
Grateful for your advice please.
Thanks, Brett

NTBackup is basic in its functionality and has been around for years, prior
to cd, so it doesnt backup to cd/dvd
Buy a dedicated backup app.

Instead of thinking 'backup', think 'save' and use your CD burning program
to save important stuff..

ntbackup.exe does not allow backing up directly to CD.

From NTBACKUP README.TXT

[[NTBackup Backup/Restore and ASR release notes
2. Backup to CDRW

If you decide to backup to a CDRW, you cannot target that device directly.
You must create a backup set of 650MB or less and backup to a file. After
the file is complete, copy the file to the CDRW.]]

Mike
I understand that I have to save the buckup on the hard disc and than burn
it on CD.
I have been burning on CD my personal/data files selected manually one by
one each time.
I understand that NTBACKUP backs up also some system (Windows) data. Is this
correct?
Thanks

NTbackup was designed to back small files to diskette, or large tracts of
files to a tape drive.. no, it will not directly backup to an optical drive,
and the method you describe is what you have to do.. NTbackup will attempt
to compress the compilation and saves it as a .bkp file which can then only
be decrypted by exactly the same version of NTbackup..

However, if you use regular CD burning software and CDRW discs, you can just
save stuff that can be read by any computer, and easily recovered as no
specialist program is required (unless you use InCD or similar packet
writer)..

Am trying to backup my Quicken files to CD on my laptop (Windows xp from
Dell). I have downloaded the ntbackup to my desktop, but I am thinking that
this is not enough. Right now, my computer "says" that the file has been put
in a temporary folder and is waiting to be written to Cd......how do I do
this? Am I understanding you all to be saying that backing up to a CD of
Quicken files requires software that I don't have? thx.

Quicken has built-in backup capabilities. You're best off using it, not
NTBACKUP. I backup my Quicken files to a USB thumb drive every other day or
so. Actually I have two thumb drives that I use for this purpose, and
alternate between using them.
