Backup to writeable DVD

Norton Ghost 2003 can backup across a network. It does not burn directly to
disk across a network but can be set to dump the image file to a mapped
drive which can later be burned to DVD or CD-R.

Ghost is not a true "back up" program. It creates a HD Image. Yes,
you can restore the entire partition with it, but that's not what a
"backup" program does.

WIll it break the image to CDR-sized chunks over the network ?

Hi

From http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;315255, I
understand that the native Windows XP backup program can't back up
directly
to writeable optical media (CD and DVD). Any recommendations for a backup
program that can? I need to back up several Windows XP on a local LAN.

Thanks!

Yes it will. You need to click the button to get into the Advanced section.
There click on the Command Tab and enter the following switches
-split=700 -autoname -z9

-split= determines the size of chunks in MBs so if you use CD-R/Ws you need
to reduce the size to 650
-autoname will ensure that each chunk is named appropriately i.e
Mybackup.gho, Mybackup.001, Mybackup.002 etc.
-z9 sets the compression to maximum. The range is from 1 to 9 with 9 being
highest compression

Just a small extra tip - the -z9 only reduces the backup file size by
a teeny bit more than -z7 but it is one heck of a lot slower, so I
have switched to -z7 as the best compromise.
