backup registry XP home but...

I want to back up the whole gol durn registry in my pre-
installed version of windows XP home. KB322756 says to use
the "Backup Utility" to backup the "system state" and for
additional information on how to do this veiw the KB
articles listed below.

308422 How to use backup to back up files and folders in
windows XP

320820 How to use the backup utility to back up files and
folders in windows XP home edition

326216 (applied to windows server 2003)

I had to make the gigantic leap of assumption that "system
state" is equal to "files and folders" and veiwed article
320820 only to find that the backup utility for windows XP
is not included in preinstalled versions, it only comes
with gol durn CD.

Where can I get me this magical program called backup
utility so's I can back my registry and system state and
files and folders up right and proper?

I have tried other backup utilities and end up with more
hives than a gol durn bee farmer.

To backup XP's registry, simply create a restore point.

The term 'system state' when used in reference to System Restore means the
registry as well as key system and user files needed to run Windows XP. Each
restore point contains your 'system state' at a given point in time.

If you really would prefer to backup only the registry, there are plenty of
utilities available on the Internet that can do this for you. I have never
had reason to use one, but I'm pretty sure that one or more of the regulars
here can provide you with a good recommendation.

Thanks, but I leave system restore turned off. Got better
things to do with my PC than create a bunch of useless
restore points and run useless processes and services.
I just want one file that contains a backup that i can
click on and it restores everything to a previous state. I
was using ERUNT.EXE but when I needed it made nine hives
instead of seven and i had to do a reformat and new
install, losing everything.

You can use the Microsoft utility called Ntbackup.exe, which is part of XP,
to backup the Documents and Settings folder of ALL users. This will include
the registry hives. If you can not find Ntbackup.exe on your hard drive,
then look on the XP CDROM. It is not automatically installed with XP home
edition:

Inert the CD, navigate to VALUEADD\MSFT\NTBACKUP , Double-click the
ntbackup.msi file to install NTBackup. Make a desktop link, if you want.

However, Ntbackup.exe only works from the windows interface, so if the
registry is really messed up, and you can not boot into windows, this
appraoch will be of little value.

I have had good luck with a shareware program called WinRescueXP, by
www.superwin.com.

More extreme alternatives include a complete backup of the partition with
the operating system, such as via Norton GHOST, PowerQuest(now Norton)
DriveImage, or Acronis Trueimage.
