backup of outlook

D

david

i'm attempting to get a copy of my contacts, calandar&
tasks....either copied or exported... from outlook to
another file for back-up.

attempting w/ inport-export of outlook ... i've tried
about everthing i can think of ... searching my computer
for any file hidden or any thing .. *.pst ect. ect..

nothing ...no files found

i can go through the steps to get it into another folder
but then i can't open it via bad path

or it won't let me transfer it, via invaled file name..
and it also will turn the file into an exell document ...
depending on which way i attempt to copy it..

what's up with this trouble...

i thought i was just going to export it as a .pst file
easy as that

You can find out where your .PST file is located by taking these steps:

1) If the Folder List isn't showing in Outlook, click View | Folder List to
toggle it "On".
2) In the Folder List, right click the root folder of your Personal Folders
file (it may say Outlook Today, or just Personal Folders). When the menu
pops up, click Properties.
3) Click the Advanced button and then look at the Filename box. This is
where the .PST file is located.

Now, see if you can find that same location in Windows. If you're having
trouble, the folder may be hidden, so do a search and include hidden folders
in the search. Once you are able to see the .PST file in Windows, you
should be able to copy it somewhere else as needed. (Close Outlook before
you try to copy it...)

Simply copying the .pst would seem like an easy way to
backup the file. This is not an export. Do this outside
of Outlook. Outlook will be the only program able to
read the file, but if all you want is a backup, it's a
simple method.

My search shows two .PST files, one called outlook, and the other, archive.
Outlook is 161 MB, and the archive is 40KB. Which?

If Outlook says the file is there (did you follow the steps I gave you to
find the path to the .PST file?), then it's there. Did you do a search, or
did you just drill down in Windows Explorer? If you're just drilling down,
you'll need to go into Tools | Folder Options | View tab (in a Windows
Explorer window), and in Advanced Settings, select "Show hidden files and
folders". Then you should be able to see the folders you can't see now.
When you're done backing up your file, you should probably go back into
Folder Options and hide the hidden folders again.

thanks for the replies..
i did follow your steps ( so i think)

C:\Documents and Settings\DAVID BURTON\Local
Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook.pst

so far i have searched all folders and files in c:drive...
hidden and all...for:
*.pst ..............no results
outlook.pst .........no results
outlook*.pst
outlook ...........59 found
out look ...........247 "
out look.pst ........1 "
with this name C:\Documents and Settings\DAVID
BURTON\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook
called an 'office data file'

5mg(+or-) w/ a bunch of giberish symbols in the
body of the document, or whatever it is called.
this the only one that would let me open it... is this
it??

if i save this to a removeable storage , can i just plug
it back into a newly installed outlook application...
after a crash?????

i can't see any .pst anywhere.. other than in the
advanced window of personal folders, in outlook.. why is
that???

thanks for your patients .. i apriciate it!!!

This DOES match the file path you typed in above...so it stands to reason
this is the correct file...

..PST files can only be opened in Outlook...you shouldn't attempt to open a
..PST from Windows Explorer. Hopefully you haven't corrupted it by opening
it with something else.

Yes...just use File | Open | Outlook Data File to open any .PST file in
Outlook. However, Outlook can't open a .PST from a CD, so you'll need to
copy it back to your hard drive and make sure it's not marked "read only"
before Outlook will open it.

You already found your .PST file by a search of your Windows folders...where
else would you expect to see a .PST?

If you're not getting any errors while using your .PST file, it's probably
not corrupt :) But you can always use the Inbox Repair Tool on it to
check for (and repair) any errors. Search your hard drive for a file called
scanpst.exe and run it. Let it make a backup of your .PST file before it
repairs anything, just as a precaution.

Yes, you can back up just certain items from one .PST file to another...if
that's what you find useful to the way you work, go for it.
