Backup in XP-Pro Size Limit?

Using XP-Pro Backup utility to do a complete backup of C: (~20GB) to 120GB USB2.0 external hard drive
After the Backup utility had written ~4.2GB the backup stopped
A message was displayed saying only 4GB could be written, with no options to do anything else
The external drive had over 100GB of space
Does anyone know why the backup would stop after 4GB

That's the maximum file size on a FAT32 formatted partition. You'll need to
format as NTFS if you need to write larger files.

I just did a 69GB backup over the weekend. So the XP backup definatelly
doesn't have a limit, at least not that low. Did you check your event
viewer to see if it has an etry that may help?

Thanks Mar
That makes sense. I'll have to see if the Western Digital USB external can be formated as NTFS

Turned out the answer was the format that came on the WD120GB external drive. It was Fat32 which has a file size limit of 4GB which would not have occured to me. Another responder pointed it out. I reformated the external drive to NTFS and the XP Backup utility worked great. This forum is a great source of information
Thanks

After seeing Mark's post, I realized that was probably the problem. As with
you, I didn't think about the 4gig limit on FAT32 formatted drives.
