Backup. Export or copy .pst file. What's the diff?

I'm new to outlook and have a backup question.

I want to backup my email, calender, notes, contacts, the works.

To do this, I just copy the outlook.pst file somewhere right? I did
this and the file is around 300meg

Now, I also did an export .pst file and the file is called backup.pst
and it's around 600meg.

I'm wondering what the difference is betwen those mothods and why is
the exported file double in size?

Also, which is the best method to use? Export or copy the file to
another location?
