Backup Exec backed up way too much

I've been trying to think up an appropriate subject line and I guess that
fits.

I had a real odd thing happen with last night backup. I'm using Veritas
Backup Exec ver 8.6 for Windows 2000 Server. It's a small server with
between 400 and 600 megs of data that get changed or created each day and I
do an incremental backup to the servers hard drive and then a batch file
running in the task scheduler copies that to one of those new solid state
usb drives with a half a gig capacity. With compression I've never gone over
about 400 megs.

Last nights backup file never got copied. It seems it was 1.9 gigs in size
and that doesn't fit too well on a half gig drive. The same backup job runs
Monday through Thursday and looking back through the Activity Monitor all of
the completed jobs were between 400 and 600 megs except for last night.

So I compared the completed job properties with the actual files. The folder
that gets backed up shows 1.9 gigs in 510 folders containing 15,257 files.
The backup job log shows 1.9 gigs in 1,050 folders and 599 files.

I'm not backing up the system state.
It's set to overwrite media.

Someone, please hit me with a clue by 4.

You think so? My virus detection program (NAV Corporate Edition) looks for
new defination files every day. And there's nothing else suspicious going
on. The server always gets the latest patches and is running great.
