At first I didn't think this had anything to do with security. But how
I am wrong with that! :)

As a suggestion download a file compactor (such as WinRAR, for
example) and learn how to use the command line options. Then create an
entry in the Sheduled Tasks with the command line and schedule it
accordingly to your needs.

The Windows Backup program, ntbackup.exe, is by default not installed on a
system running XP Home Edition. It can be installed from the installation CD.
Take a look at this article for more info.

HOW TO: Install Backup from the CD-ROM in Windows XP Home Edition

If you don't have an actual XP installation CD, you can download the ntbackup
installation file here.

Keep in mind that there are better options than ntbackup if you're aim is to
backup the entire contents of your hard drive. For that task you might want to
consider an imaging program such as Acronis True Image or Norton Ghost.

Good luck

The backup utility does not seem to allow backup to a DVD. Is it something I
have'nt set up correctly?

I am just trying to backup selected data files to a DVD. A CD will not hold
the data I want to backup. Maybe nt backup is not the solution.

If you need the backup ocasionaly - not very often, and are prepared
to do this by hand "not automaticly", then simply make the selection
and archive the files using zip or rar (win)... tar or gzip (linux).
However, if the data you need to backup is important (most data is)
and you are not willing to leave anything to chance, then perhaps
finding a better solution is more appropriate. You should google some
articles on backup - understand the terms like ... incremental and
differential etc. For personal use, i supose that making a copy of
"users foldera" is enough, you can reinstall the system if something
goes wrong without to much worries. But if you keep data for business,
you should take backup very seriously. Having a RAID array is a good
idea, or perhpas HP's storage works with tape drives also gets
results.

ntbackup cannot write to CD and DVD drives. What you have to have is
another drive letter to "stage" the backup to, and when it finished,
then copy it to DVDs. ntbackup.exe works, but no bells & whistles at
all are included and it's a little goofy it won't handle optical drives,
but that's how it's designed.

Phantom had some good comments, I think. Rather then repeat it, i'll
just recommend his post.

Thanks Twayne,

it seams that he find a solution - no more posts after our replies -
suggestions.
