backing up

I previously asked if there were a set of files that could
be copied to back up the items in outlook. the only
response i got was ".pst". I did a search and no ".pst"
files came up. Is there a "setting" which permits the
user to define where data is stored? is there a better
answer to where/what name data is stored so i can back it
up?

Enable Hidden and System files in your search (Advanced Search options)
Search using "*.pst" (without the quotes)

And please quote at least some of the post you are replying to, so the
thread remains intact.

Thank you.

It really depends on a few things. If you are in an
Exchange environment, then the email is normally stored on
a server and your administrator would take care of baking
that up. But you can always create a PST file, save it
where ever you want, and move your mail into that.

Normally though, Outlook stores email in a PST file. The
file is typically buried deep on your hard drive, and may
even be in a folder that is not visible if your OS is
win2k or XP. I have win2K and officeXP and the file was
created here: C:\Documents and Settings\userName\Local
Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\file.pst. By
default, the "local settings" folder is hidden in win XP
and 2k so if you have one of those OS's then that may be
why you didn't find it in a search.

Also, may people get outlook and outlook express confused
with each other. Outlook express keeps it's mail in
different files, so if you have that, then you probably
won't find any PST files.
