Take the computer to a store.
Ask them to replace the disk & attempt to clone the old one to the new.

DriveImage from Acronis, or ask your friendly computer
dealer for assistance.

If you have a cdrw drive or dvd-rw drive you can back up or save your
important data to CD/Dvd's. If not have a new
drive installed very soon and have them transfer the data over to your
new drive.

Probably your best approach at this point, instead of spending the time on
the learning curve to learn how to backup the drive, is take the computer to
a competent computer repair shop. Have them clone the old drive to a new
one and install it for you.

Then do some work learning how to backup. Frankly this should not have been
the time you thought about backups. You should always have a full and
complete backup of important data. One simple way is to just copy the
important data to CD or DVD.

For a robust backup solution I recommend you invest in a drive imaging
program such as Acronis True Image (ATI) Home version 10, and an EIDE hard
drive in an external hard drive enclosure connected by USB to the computer.
Use ATI to regularly create an compressed image of the drive saved to the
that external hard drive. Images can be done of the drive or individual
partitions, and ATI also has a file backup capability to backup selected
files. Restores can be done of individual files, partitions or drives. ATI
can also clone drives.

You can get ATI, an EIDE hard drive and an external hard drive enclosure
from Newegg.com. One good drive is a Western Digital EIDE Caviar 320GB
drive. A white box kit of this drive is available for less than $90.
Kingwin is one manufacturer of external drive enclosures. Enclosures are in
the $20 range.

western digital for one provides backup/transfer software with their new drives just for that purpose.
if not in the box with the drive, is can be downloaded from their web site.

if your computer knowledge is really that limited, it might be better to PAY someone to help with it.

or check with the public library and/or high/tech/college schools in your area for a computer club where someone might be able to help you.
