Background processes made into running applications

My subject line doesnt accurately describe my problem.

I am technical support at a small business and our accountant called me over
to her computer for help. Roughly 50+ empty windows had opened after she ran
a excel 2000 macro. These windows were previously background proccesses for
norton antivirus, and other programs etc, but they had been made into running
applications, as empty windows.

The macro is a macro our accountant uses every week and we have antivirus
and anti spyware software installed that are reporting no problems.

I am just wondering how exactly this happened, and is there a way so this
doesnt happen again, not that this has ever happened before.

That might be what was perceived but that didn't happen. It's the result of
some poorly written code possibly VBScript or VBA. Keep a Task
Manager|Processes window open so that you can see when this happens (looking
for excel.exe).
