background intelligent transfer switched off.

BITS has switched itself off, preventing (I think) downloads of Windows
Updates and Defender definitions. When I try to switch it on in Services I
get the message 'Windows could not start the Background Intelligent Transfer
Service on Local Computer. For more information review the System Event Log.
If this is a non-Microsoft service, contact the service vendor and refer to
service-specific error code -2147024891'.
Any help. Updates have been ineffective for a couple of weeks now.

What did you see when you looked in your system event logs?

Thanks for reply. After much messing around I've managed to solve that
problem BUT i had to download and reinstall Windows Defender. Now the new
version tells me my definitions are 236 days out of date, but when I try to
download new definitions I get this message:' Unable to complete update.
Error code 0x0070663. This patch could not be opened. Verify that the patch
package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor
to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer pa.'

Any thoughts on that?
