Back Up Did Not Complete Successfully, Error - 0x81000005

I have a brand new HP Pavillion with Microsoft Vista, Premium Home Edition
and attempted to perform the system back up as set by the system, the back up
failed half the way through with the error stating:

The back up did not complete successfully

An error occured the following information might help you resolve the error:

There is not enough disk space to save the back up files.
Free up disk space or change your back up settings
(0x81000005)

Back up location - HP_RECOVERY (D

The system prompts you to use the D: which shows only 8.5 mb and I have not
been able to change this setting to save to another location or allow the
system to increase disk space. The laptop has 100 gig and this was a setting
established by Vista, I have saved practially nothing on the hard drive so
there shouldn't be a problem with my files causing this.

Any suggestions I would really like to use this functionality.

Isn't this a dedicated partition used by HP in case you have to do a
re-install of the operating system?
It's usually small, so you won't be able to use that.

If you are trying to backup the WHOLE of C: check and see how much data is
used, I think you will be very surprised at just how much data there is
there already.

As a test - backup a small folder and see if that works, if it does.. it
proves the small recovery partition does not have enough space for you are
ARE trying to back up.

I just let the system perform as it was designed

If you main C: partition is 100GB, then the option here is to shrink the
partition size down and then create a new partition with new drive letter
that can be used as a backup partition for your own data. alternatively, if
you have an external usb hard drive you could always backup onto this
instead.

If you go into computer management, click storage, Disk management, if you
right click on the partitions in question you will see that you can shrink
and enlarge them. Remember though, you stand to lose data here if you mess
around!

dballauer - the recovery partition cannot be accessed via normal means
(explorer for one) - and if accessed is read only - it cannot be written to.
The HP manual (probably in a "docs" folder) details how to create CD/DVD
recovery disks for restore purposes and an utility to delete the recovery
partition.
Primary difference in restoring from CD/DVD versus using the recovery
partition is that you can only restore the entire computer - with the
partition you can restore drives, application or OS.

If the backup provided with Home Premium is the "Complete Backup and
Restore" utility you cannot backup to an internal drive on which Vista is
installed -must use an internal or external HD or replaceable Media
(CD/DVD).

One other thing - when the recovery partition is created the MBR (Master
boot record) is modified to present a message such as "Press F11 to
restore..." at boot. Manually deleting the partition does not removed the
MBR mod - which is recommended to use HP's removal utility.
