Back to my roaming profile again

O

Owe Armandt

As in my ealier post here I said I have 2 sites with a DC in each connected
to each other with a 512 kbps link.
In AD I have set my profile to be like \\siteadc\profiles\username - when I
log on in site A I get my profile loaded, but when I log on in site B I do
not get my profile loaded.

Anyone knows why??

Q279282 Slow File Write from Windows 2000 to Windows NT 4.0 Server
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q279/2/82.asp

XP machines=Disable the "Web client" to see if it resolves the issue.

Check for large security templates that apply on startup
(%systemroot%\security\policies\templates is where we cache policies
locally)

You can enable userenv logging per:

Q221833 Enabling User Environment Debug Logging in Retail Windows
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q221/8/33.asp

You might not see any specific errors but you can look at the Timestamp
next to
"Recurse Directory" which is normally where we copy the profile: A sample
line from
a userenv log is listed below:

Start Line:
USERENV(17f0.24f8) 10:32:53:015 RecurseDirectory: Adding
\\<ServerName>\<ShareName>\jdtest\Application Data\Adobe\Acrobat\WHAPI\ to
the list of
directories

End Line:
USERENV(17f0.24f8) 10:33:01:593 RecurseDirectory: Adding
\\<ServerName>\<ShareName>\jdtest\windows\ to the list of directories

We can also compare the timestamp that from the first line of the user
logon:
USERENV(17f0.24f8) 10:32:45:843 LoadUserProfile: Entering, hToken =
<0x1f4>,
lpProfileInfo = 0x6f64c
USERENV(17f0.24f8) 10:32:45:843 LoadUserProfile: Entering, hToken =
<0x1f4>,
lpProfileInfo = 0x6f64c
USERENV(17f0.24f8) 10:32:45:843 LoadUserProfile: lpProfileInfo->dwFlags =
<0x0>
USERENV(17f0.24f8) 10:32:45:843 LoadUserProfile: lpProfileInfo->lpUserName
=
<jdtest>

and the last line.

A simple test would be to copy the profile to another server, location or
even
locally to the machine and try logging on. You can change the profile path
in the
user's profile on Windows NT or Windows 2000 to eliminate the issue and
determine
if the server or resouce is overloaded.

UserEnv is one of the best ways to see why you would be failing to load
your profile. Another one would be to get a network capture. Keep in mind
that if you do have roaming profiles enabled, and logging on accross the
WAN, you may want to make sure you do not have a lot of Temp Internet Files
configured.

Remember to go back and turn off Userenv logging when you are done.

My environment is Win 2000 Servers and a mix of Win XP Pro/Win 2000 Pro
clients.
2 DCs, one in each site. The logonserver is the one in the same site as the
client but the profile could (for some users) be on the DC in the other
site. If I try to use a local server for the profile it works fine. I have
enabled verbos logging on UserEnv and it says like:

USERENV(b8.a0) 12:45:26:078 CheckForSlowLink: The profile is across a slow
link
USERENV(b8.a0) 12:45:26:078 ParseProfilePath: Profile is across a slow link.
Ignoring roaming profile path

I have try to set the proper settings in AD to disable checking for a slow
link but without success - might I be missing something there, what is
needed?? My users belong to an OU and in the Group Policy I have disabled
slow link check.
