AyN8X2.0: Will it run w/256 mg 2100 DDRam?

sdlomi

Just got my mobo. Inst'ld 2100XP, T'bred, B series. Set fsb to 100 and
tried mult's. of 10, 13, & in-betweens. Tried setting all to Defaults.
Tried fsb of 133 w/sev. diff. mult's. Using 40-g hd from
'just-gone-bad-caps Abit slot-1mobo, using Upgradeware adaptor on Cele-tual.
1.4gig as I removed it. (Been running great!) Wish to avoid reformat of
h/d at any cost.
Bios sees WD 40g as master & cdrom as slave, floppy, video.

SYSTEM:
-A7N8X v2.0,
-using bios 1006
-video: generic GE2-MX400-64mb (probably less than 8x, maybe 4or 2???)
-128 mg PNY ram with Samsung chips, DDR, single channel (tried alone).
Bought it from Best Buy.
-256 mg RK-BYTE ram w/Elixir chips, DDR, 1-channel (tried alone)
-each ram has only 8 chips on just one side. 256 mg stick-pkg. reads "256
mb-ddr, 2100/2700, lifetime warranty". Bought it from Office Max
-40gig WD, 7200 rpm, harddrive, connected as pri. master on ide 1, using new
80-conductor cable.
-Mitsubishi floppy connected with new cable
-32X generic cd-rom, as slave for WD hd--Blue end of 80-cond. con'd. to ide
1
-black(other end) of 80-cond. cable attached to cd-rom as slave--nothing
connected to gray, middle, connector
-new SkyHawk 350-watt(conservatively rated) power supply, AMD approved, with
like 28 amps on 3.3volt rail, 25amps on the +5volt rail, 14amps on the
+12volt rail, 2.0 amps on the standby

Trying to boot, bios sees floppy, hd as pri-master, cd-rom as pri-slave,
and 128 mg ram(with the PNY) and 256mg ram (with the RK_BYTE), shows either
stick of ram as "single-channel". Goes thru process until the screen
appears to "Start normally, Start w/last known good configuration, Start in
Safe Mode, and Start in Safe Mode with Commands". Tried each choice--get
about 5 seconds of black screen, then a momentary flash of blue with
unreadable text (It is on and then instantly off!). Then boot process
automatically begins again. No other periphs connected at this time.
Obviously I need some help! Thanks in advance--all ideas appreciated.,
Sam

None of this is relevant, the memory isn't the problem. You can't mode
Win2k/XP to a diffent IDE controller. Your hardware is fine. You will
have to re-install your Windows. The text probably says something like
unable to access ide controller or similar. Oh and the GF2 MX is 4x AGP.

You can't move Win2k/XP I mean, the invention of spellcheckers was lost
on me.

Thanks, Barry. Sure sounds like you know what you are talking about.
Two questions (dumb?): (1) If I install a new h/d as the master--replacing
my 'loaded-with-data' 40-gig WD-- could I then slave the WD to the new h/d
without altering the WD? If not, (2) Is there any way to re-install my
Windows on the WD without formatting and losing all my data?
Appreciative of all the help and advice. Sam

(1) Yes you can.
(2) Yes you can, just, just boot with the 2k/XP cd of your choice and
choose to install in the same location as your old windows. There is no
need to reformat.

1 is probably a better option as it ensures you won't lsoe any documents
or other files off the WD, but it does of course require a new hard disk.

Barry,

Wouldn't a REPAIR INSTALL work better in this case. Installing Windows
back to the same directory, as you indicate, will solve the problem but
leads to a fresh Win install with many of the previously installed
programs being disconnected/non-functional because the registry is
completely re-written. A REPAIR INSTALL will leave the registry
basically intact but will reform the HAL (Hardware Abstract Layer) which
is most likely the current issue!

That would probably work but I didn't suggest it as I was slightly
concerned as to whether it would remove the old drivers since he was
transferring from an old Slot A motherboard. Given the change over in
hardware my preference would be for a clean install.
