AVI files crash programs

I have this problem, that's been bugging me for quite
some time : whenever I try to view an AVI file, whatever
program I'm using to see it crashes. I updated
everything, and still, no go. It doesn't leave a log, or
even an indication of what happens ; just "This program
has produced errors and will now be closed".

Anyone has any idea ?

Does it happen for *all* AVI files?
