avi capture

I'm at my wits end!

Three different video editing software programs all have
the same problem when trying to capture video in avi
format either through a DV camera via firewire or even
TV through the video card (ATI AIW 8500). The avi files
play back with poor quality where the interlacing seems
to really breakdown when the image is in motion. Even
still images are poor compared to mpeg captures. I've
changed the grphics card, tried my camera on someone elses
system and as I have mentioned, used 3 different software
packages and it all points to something else. What is it?
What is the problem capturing avi's?

Your system may be dropping frames, which shows up as distortion of various
kinds when played back.

Try to capture a clip of a known length, e.g. capture exactly 5 minutes of a
clip. Then look at the length of the captured clip. You may find that the
length is less than you expected.

Which motherboard and soundcard are you using? Although the soundcard
should not participate in DV capture, it can have a significant impact on
performance.

David
