AVI Capture Problems

Jim Palatine

I am running XP Professional on a 2.54 P4 with 512Meg to
a drive with 100% free space of 120gig. It is 7200 rpm.
When I try to capture with my Sony digital camcorder
as .avi the video captured is jerky with jerky sound
loss. This happens even on short clips of 15seconds. I
have tried everything, is it possible that my Codec
for .avi files is messed-up? Can I download a new one?
Any other ideas?

Thanks,

Jim

No, it's not the codec, because the camcorder sends a stream (~3.61MB/s
~30Mbps) which will be captured by the PC
(~a kind of copy - there will notnhing be rendered until you create new
pictures, e.g. transitions)

It seems, you loose some informations of the stream...

How did you connect the camcorder? USB? Afaik is there no camcorder yet
supporting USB 2.0 HighSpeed - and USB 2.0 FullSpeed = USB 1.1 has only a
bandwith of 12Mbps....
=> You should use IEEE-1394 (aka firewire aka i.Link ~400Mbps) to capture
footages

Do you have DMS enabled for your Harddisk?

Cheers,
Hausi

Are you capturing with the cable that came with the camcorder? What is the
model of your camcorder?

.
I am using the firewire connection . It is a Sony TRV38.
Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

I am having similar problems with my SONY DV camcorder, p4
1.8GHz with 396 mb ram with a blank 7200 rpm 80 gb hard
drive and Win XP with latest service packs and patches.
Have downloaded the latest WHQL certified NVIDIA driver
for my video card and am using Firewire with the cable
that came with my camcorder. I dont know whether I have
DMS turned on for the HD since I have no idea what that is.
(Dynamic Media Services?)
Anyway, any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Sean

You didn't answer this question:

Some people (including some of my customers) think the cable that comes with
the camcorder is FireWire.

.

usb was a bust. what is dms and how do I turn it on or
off? Thanks,

Jim

Sean,

If I find the answer I'll let you know. Please do the
same. I have tried everything. I have one disk that is
empty that i use only for video. i am wondering if some
software i am running is causing it, eg norton virus scan
but i turned it off with no difference. i have defragged
the empty drive just for snicks, still nothing. did you
try capturing in other formats?

Jim,

You need to turn off all the active programs that you don't need while
capturing. The biggest offender is your anti-virus software. Other programs
like fastfind.exe that run in the background will cause skipping also. It's
best that your hard drive be fully defragged for best transfer speed to the
drive. You can do a test capture and hit Ctrl-Alt-Del to bring up the Task
Manager. Look at the Processes list for other active programs that are
trying to run while you are capturing. End Task for all uneeded functions.

Good luck,
Larry
