AVG Free version wont uninstall

Does anyone know how to manually uninstall AVG free version?? I've tried via
add/remove programs in control panel but nothing happens. Actually something
does happen in that XP beeps and the screen flickers as though a window
tried to open but couldn't! Not sure if that is a problem with XP,my PC or
AVG as I have no problems removing other software. I've just purchased
McAfee Anti Virus 2004 ver8.0 but cannot install it as it detects AVG &
insists on its removal.
I've also tried reinstalling AVG to remove it but that didn't work nor did
trying to remove it in safe mode.
Anybody got any ideas? AVG website FAQs doesn't mention uninstalling.

Did you disable the Resident Shield from the Control Panel and then
shut down the Control Panel to disable the AVG before uninstalling?
Then try the uninstall tab under AVG AntiVirus on the Start Menu,
Programs Tab. It worked for me. Good luck.

Thanks for reply. I tried what you said but still no luck I get same as I
mentioned in my post. Incidentally AVG or Grisoft does not appear under
Start/Program Files !! I have to find it using explorer under C:/Program
Files/Grisoft/AVG.
I reinstalled it last night & it is there & up to date with its resident
shield on & functional it just doesnt appear anywhere under Start/Programs.
What else can I try??

Right click on that bar where systray, start menu, and all that stuff
is. Select properties, and go to Start Menu Programs.

You may have deselected (during install) the option to have an entry in
the Start Menu.

Delete the grosoft folder and perform a registry cleanup using regseeker or
some other similar cleaner.

Search the registry for any "UninstallString" relating to AVG stuff.
