AVG and Avast used together?

Hi,

I have AVG resident shield and Avast on-access protection being turned on
simultaneously on my pc.

Will they cause any software conflict to each other? Should I just stick to
1 of them instead of using both at the same time? Which one is superior?

Tommi,

Not sure if they will confict with each other, but one may pick the other up
on a realtime scan

What you will notice is a slower machine as you have 2 scanners hogging
resources.

Me personally wouldn't use either of those products & had Avast on my U3
flash drive when I bought it which I immediately deleted. Although, this is
my opinion

The general principle is that you should only have one antivirus
product memroy resident and actively running. If you want to have a
second program available you should turn off the memory resident
functions in that program and just use it manually whenever you want a
"second opinion" on a specific file, group of files, or the entire
hard drive. Having two antivirus programs active at the same time
can cause conflicts, as both try to spring into action whenever a
suspicious circumstance is detected.

As to which of your two is better, that is something that I am not
going to get into. I have used AVG myself for several years now and
it has always been fully adequate in terms of protecting my PC. On
the other hand a number of people who's opinions I respect will say
the same things about Avast.

Instead of having a second antivirus installed I do an occasional
full system scan at http://housecall.trendmicro.com or one of the
other free scanning sites.

Good luck

AVG is very computer friendly. Unlike PCillin, McAfee, and Norton. The
latter is the worst of the lot. Many people have trouble with all 3 of
them. Then there are some that has no problems with them. I believe I
must have been using AVG for like 6 years now. It is the greatest
anti-virus IMHO.

I have both on my computer but have shut down the resident scanner on AVG,
using Avast as my primary antivirus. I just use AVG as an on-demand scanner
to scan downloaded files before I open them. I also have Clam and
Bitdefender for the same purpose. Bitdefender seems to do the best job when
scanning files.

I don't know specifically if these two will conflict. If not, using
two on one machine will bog down your system. I use both AVG and
Avast! but on separate machines. Both work well, perhaps a slight
preference for Avast!

You can have more than one AV program installed but only one should be
configured for real time protection. Use the other for manual scanning.

I have used both, and personally prefer Avast, but no AV program is perfect,
and as you have seen there are those that prefer AVG. Another options is
NOD32 which gets high marks from most folks, but it's not free.

AV is a reactive technology anyway, and only one layer in securing a
computer. The most important aspect of safe computing is the user.

tommi,

Yes. Running more than one active antivirus program have been known
to cause conflicts, so pick one. I'm partial to AVG since I use it...

You can have multiple virus scanners on your computer at one time with
no problems, IF you only have one of them as resident. The others should
only perform scans manually.

You can see that I was (playfully) replying to my colleague, Tom Willett,
not you, tommi.

Looks like Avast is favoured more than AVG. Now I've disabled AVG's real-time
protection and only use Avast's.

There's another free AV - avira antivir, have tried using it but it took
ages for updates and most of the time, it says can't connect to a particular
server for downloading a file.

Anyone had same experience?

Yea, I noticed that with antivir also. I switched to avast and I prefer it
much better.
