Avast! "Updates expire...."

In my Avast Home Editions 4.1 under the 'About' section it says 'Update
expiration: Wednesday, Dec 01, 2004 8:58:06'.

Does this really mean anything? I assumed the free Home Edition will
continue receiving updates indefinitely.

You will have to re-register it every 14 months. Still no charge. It
says this somewhere on their site.

By coincidence, being a long time Avast user, I received my request
for re-registration today. This excerpt pretty well explains it:

"Dear avast! user,

Thank you for using our antivirus - avast! Home Edition. Because you
registered the program one year ago the validity of activation key will
expire within few days and it will not be possible to update the virus
database of avast! program. So please register again. You will receive
new activation key. By entering this key into avast you will be allowed
to get updates for the next one year."
