I am running Avast 4.6 Home Edition (build 4.6.623) under Win98
(original edition).

When I close Avast after a complete scan of my hard drive, I get an
error message saying that Ashsimpl.exe has caused a fault and must be
closed.

Does anyone know why this would be, and how it can be prevented?

Asking on the Avast forum is probably your best bet for a reliable answer.
They're usually pretty fast to come back. Or use their search feature and
you may find the answer immediately. I have some bones to pick with them
elsewhere, but those aspects of Avast support are excellent.

Thanks for the very useful link. A search of the forum messages turned
up two possible solutions: update the Windows ODBC database files, or
change a line in avast4.ini from "Database=ODBC" to "Database=XML".
Since the second suggestion seems simpler, I'll start with that one.

Your help is much appreciated.
