availability of Nikon 5000 ED

D

David Blanchard

I'm trying to replace my old SCSI-based Nikon LS-2000 with a newer
USB2-based Nikon 5000 ED. All of the sites I normally web shop are
out of stock with no date available for new shipments.

Any reason why everyone (or at least the ones I checked) might be
out of stock? Is Nikon about to release an update to the 5000?

Truth, speculation, rumors, anything welcome!

David

P.S. The downside to upgrading is that once I see a few scans from
the newer 5000 compared to the older 2000, I'm probably going to
want to re-scan everything. Again.

To judge by your email address you are in the US. Here in the UK the
very first store that came up on Froogle says the availability is next
week.

B&H shows the 5000 as "In stock":

As does Newegg:

Hope this helps,
Dave

Have you tried Amazon? Amazon often sells directly, out of their own
warehouses, but they also offer items from their partners. Sometimes you
can buy components from either Amazon or their partners. Other times you
can choose only from Amazon or only from their partners. They usually have
several vendors from which you can choose. Each vendor sets their own
price, so you need to look over the list.

Amazon handles the credit card billing, so your info is not turned over to
companies you might not be familiar with. I've bought numerous items from
Amazon and have always gotten first-class service, prompt delivery and
prices lower than the New York camera shops. Amazon has a liberal return
policy if you are not satisfied.

Next week, eh. That's not too long to wait. I've never used Froogle.
Maybe I'll start. Thanks.

In fact, I ordered it through Amazon and was informed that there would be
a couple of weeks delay in shipping since none were in stock. I placed
the order anyway since I've had good results with Amazon in the past.

I checked the B&H site shortly after seeing your post...and twice
since then...and it always reports "Out of Stock." Curious.

In any case, Amazon reports that my Nikon 5000 ED shipped today even
though the original ship date was estimated at mid-October. However,
the estimated delivery date is early October! Curiouser and curiouser!!

Personally I think Nikon's D-Max rating of 4.8 is quite awesome for the 5000 ED, even
4.2 with the V ED is acceptable. Plustek gives us 3.3 and PI gives us 2.8 & 3.2 which
are not enough. But do you really think it's worth THAT much money?

Do you know where online I could see scanning examples of darker images? Or anyone?

about 3/4 of the way down. See the table labeled
"One perfect chrome...." The image (same chrome
for all scanners) is designed to stress dynamic range.
It's a very dense image but with dramatic highlights
as well.

You'll like the 5000. I've run over 30,000 slides and negatives
through mine and it was one of the first available. I say that with
one aside. I had a chance to try one before I purchased mine and I
have no idea where, or how he obtained it.

The scanner is fast, high resolution, and quite capable.

I use both the Nikon Scan 4 and VueScan and have been happy with both.
Nikon scan can become confused when the image has a number of
contrasty vertical lines and VueScan doesn't VueScan has a much
steeper learning curve as it gives control of more functions to the
user who may not be familiar with them.

David,

It appears to me that both B&H and Newegg had really limited stock or
the site info was faulty.

Either way, both are now reporting out of stock.

Sorry to have sent you down an empty rabbit hole. (Poor attempt at
following your Alice in Wonderland theme[curiouser and curiouser]
regarding your Amazon order)

Hope it works out OK for you in the end.

Best,
Dave

UPS tracking shows the scanner is finally about to be delivered.
So, finally, the long wait is over. But it remains a puzzle why
many places are in short supply of the item.

I've used both VueScan and NikonScan 3 on my LS-2000 but prefer NS to VS.
Now I'll get to test both of them again on the 5000 ED.

I use both VuScan and KikonScan4.X on my 5000 and like them both. Each
tends to cover the others weaknesses at least for me.

For many months I've seen various people comment that Nikon is probably
heading out of the scanner business. I can't vouch for this directly,
though. Not sure why no one has mentioned it in this thread.

I had the same sort of problems finding my current CRT (Lacie 19" at
the end of its run; its Mitsubishi counterpart had already dropped off
the market) and a new KM 50mm lens (waited too long after the Sony
buyout). If there are no new units being manufactured, it's natural
that most places will run out of stock. :)
