Autoplay not working

Appears the AutoPlay function on my wife's computer is not working. She
is running Windows XP Home Edition. It used to be; when she inserted a
memory stick; a dialogue box would pop up asking what function she
wanted to use; now nothing happens. AutoPlay is checked of in her
properties feature for each drive. I did download the Microsoft fix from
their web site and ran it several times; still doesn't work. Have logged
of and back on several times; have re-booted several times; still
nothing. Any suggestions???

Because you didn't mention what fix you used nor if you can see the
cd-rom drive in explorer at all:

Enabling Autoplay for USB keys/flash drives might not be such a good

She wants it so that when a memory card or usb stick is placed in the
computer; a dialog box pops up and asks what she wants done with these
files. Primarily it will be picture files that she wants to load unto
the computer via Picasa.
This is how it used to be. Place a camera memory stick in the computer;
it would ask what program do you want to use and she would pick Picasa.
Picasa would than open up and she would have the opportunity to pick
what picture files she wanted to be loaded on the computer. Simple and
straight forward. Don't have to use Windows Explorer at all!

Get the TweakUI powertoy for Windows XP from Microsoft. Under the "My
Computer -> Autoplay" node in the tree:

- Under the Drives node, see if all drives are enabled for AutoPlay.
- Under the Handlers node, see if any handlers (programs) are defined.

However, I would strongly suggest you disable AutoRun. This has Windows
check for the presence of an autorun.inf file and executes whatever program
is specified within that file. Because the USB device is wandering around
to other hosts, you don't know what malware it might pick up. Then you
insert it in your host and, bingo, you're now infected because you chose to
let Windows automatically execute that malware.

Recommended:
- Under the Types node, disable all drive types from using AutoRun.

The only real disadvantage of disabling AutoRun is that you can't just
insert a disc and have the setup program for installing some software
automatically start up. So just run the setup.exe program yourself (or
whatever is specified in the Run parameter inside the autorun.inf file). It
is usually pretty obvious which file they want to auto-run when you insert
the disc. Just look. Of course, it could be malware that would like to
auto-run, too.

Is the content of the CD/DVD disc actually unknown? If so, why are you
inserting it into your host? Since its expected content is known then you
also know what you might want to use to "play" that content on the disc.
AutoPlay is like walking into a room and having the wall switch announce
"Hey, I'm over here if you want to flip on the lights". You already know
whether or not you want to flip on the lights and where is the wall switch.

Didn't happen. Installed and is at the same state it was before!

Then either third-party (security?) application has been interfering or the
computer's got a hijackware infection that's disallowing the change.

Finally got it to work. Used the Program from Microsoft for fixing
"AutoPlay" problems. Had to run the program separately for each
removable drive; log out and than back in; and it finally worked.
Thanks for your trouble!
