Autonumber in Reports

I am using Access 2003
I am creating a Preventative Maintenance (PM) Db for our plants equipment.
At this time I have 3 db created 1- Basic Mach Infor, 2-PM Instructions
required by Mach # & how often they are due, 3-a history of all of the PM's
by machine number. The 3rd database has an autonumber that is the WorkOrder
#. Right now I have created a report that tells the operator, by the dates
he puts in, which machines are due for PM's and what needs to be done. In a
report form, is there a way to have the computer put in the next auto number
for the jobs are are due?
I know I have done this in forms, but can it be done in reports.

in general terms - one supposes that this autonumber needs to be recorded in
a table ultimately also....?? or maybe I do not understand...

is there a need to create new records in a table as part of this (or update
existing records)?

(if not - then do you mean simply a random number generator in your
report?...I doubt that...)

The report is built off a table ultimately whether via a query or not - - so
I think this is the first issue to clarify..
