Automating registry key permissions....

I've been unable to find any info pertaining to the following:

I've the need to be able to automate the assigning of a security group to
specific registry keys with specific permissions (the same for program
folders) on a large # of client workstations. It doesn't look as though
this can be done via 'REG.exe' in a logon script or via any group policy.
Is this possible? If so, can you explain how or point me to relative info.
