Automatic Updates & svchost.exe blocking my system

When "automatic updates" is set to "notify me but do not download and
install" then
an instance of svchost.exe is blocking my computer when a connection with
the internet is being established after boot-up.
With blocked I mean CPU-load at almost 100% for about half a minute (which
is very annoying).

I do not have this problem when I choose for one of the other possibilities
w.r.t. "automatic updates" in the "security center".

I read about a lot of people suffering from this on the web, and I thought
that XP-users and MS might be helped with this contribution.

Hello again,

When (date please) was that "black Tuesday"?
I can easily roll back on a previous disk-image and see if the updates of
that day have something to do with this problem.

Please keep me posted

Posted 17 July.
You used no name at the end of your thread - so I assumed, wrongly, that
Geo@ was short for George. Sorry
