Automatic updates no longer works

A few days ago I visited the Windows Update site and there were 9
updates waiting to be installed. I decided to leave it up to the
automatic updates feature to install them.
The problem is that the automatic updates feature doesn't seem to be
working and days later nothing has downloaded.
I have the update settings on the recommended option to automatically
download and install.
Is this normal for the update process to take so long to start working?
or is there a problem with my PC?

thanks

If you visit the Windows Update newsgroup, you'll see that this problem is
widespread, and there is no true resolution, yet.

None of the 30 WinXP computers in our office worked on the automatic update,
yet Win2K did.

If you tell it not to do so right now it seems inclined to forget. Go
to Internet Explorer - Tools - Windows Update, click the Critical
Updates link, leave them selected and take Install
