Automatic update

Does anyone know how long it takes Automatic Update to download critical
updates. For the last 2 days when I've looked in Windows Update there is
one critical update showing up. However my automatic update is not
downloading and installing it. I normally have it set to do this at 3:00 in
the morning, but nothing downloaded. Last night I set it to try at 8:00 pm
and it didn't do it. Today I set it for noon and it didn't do it. Does it
take a few days?
Thanks.

What update is not installing?

You may also want to look for the installation file in
C:\Windows, (you will probably need to make sure you can
view hidden files),and run it from there. I tried this on
a PC that was failing to install the update and I was
prompted with better messages other than the installation
failed.

For me, *post-SP2 installation* there have been 3 "high priority"
updates:

The two ".NET" updates.

the GDI+ detection tool.

None of these have "automatically installed" to my computer.

Prior to installing SP2, I had things set to "download and notify", but
went with the "automatically install" setting of SP2

*NOBODY AROUND HERE* -- and I've checked with other admins all around
the University -- got any of these 3 updates to "automatically
install".

So we're wondering if "automatic updates" is actually broken, or if
there was something specific about these 3 updates that wouldn't let
them be "automatically installed".

And we aren't really finding anything from anybody (including MVPs) to
say anything definative about this one way or the other...

Thank you for all that info. Glad I'm not the only one. Maybe there is
just a delay or it really is broken. Hopefully someone figures it out soon.
I'm just going to try and be patient and see if it installs wthin the next
week or so.

Got this info from another list:

At the moment the existence of an update does not gaurantee its download.
There is implicitly a lottery run to help control SP2 traffic. This should
go away in about five weeks.

It's probably SP2. You are in a queue for it. It will download in bits
and pieces and can take a long time.

No, I installed SP2 a while ago. Sounds like it's a temporary problem that
will resolve itself in a few weeks.
