Automatic Update

Does anyone know how long it takes Automatic Update to download critical
updates? For the last 2 days when I've looked in Windows Update there is
one critical update showing up. However my automatic update is not
downloading and installing it. I normally have it set to do this at 3:00 in
the morning, but nothing downloaded. Last night I set it to try at 8:00 pm
and it didn't do it. Today I set it for noon and it didn't do it. Does it
take a few days?
Thanks.

I have the same problem ever since service pack 2 was
installed. It had to be removed as it stopped
everything. I am still not able to get the updates
except by going to the download site and getting them
manually, saving to my desktop, and then installing
them. Good luck as this appears to be a problem. There
was a download that came out to add a new update program,
that's about the time my troubles started.

I also have been having the same problem, after the update agent was
installed automatically - nothing has updated since. I have talked to a
couple of different people with the same problem. I find it infuriating
because I take care of 111 PCs and have auto updating turned on on all of
them.

I'm also seeing this behavior with WinXP SP2.

I have Automatic Updates set to "download updates for me, but let me
choose when to install them". Pre SP2, a notification icon would appear
in the system tray when a critical update was available.

After the update agent was installed with SP2, I have not received any
notifications and nothing has updated since. When I run Windows Update
manually from the Start button menu, the browser shows 3 "high priority"
updates. However, I haven't received the automatic notification from
the update agent that I saw pre SP2.

I hope this behavior can be corrected somehow.

Regards,
Ted.

Since SP2 there have only been two Updates - one for .NET framework *if*
you had it installed, and one Optional one to run the 'GDI+' check on
any other MS applications you may have (eg Office) - that vulnerability
does not apply to SP2

the GDI+ check is *not* an "optional" install -- it's a "high priority"
install.

Therefore -- it *should* be "automatically installed" (along with the
..NET updates).

But they aren't being automatically installed for *anybody in the
world* apparently.

Why not? If they are "high priority" updates, why are they not being
automatically installed?

That's a question nobody from MS (or any MVP has been able to answer).
Want to take a shot at it? ;-)

Then why does MS allow that to show up with systems already installed with SP2? This baffled me when I got an email alert from MS regarding the JPEG issue. Even then, it stated to get an Office update for those who already have SP2 (since this didn't apply otherwise to SP2), of which pertained (when I got it) to an improved Junk email filter for Outlook (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=870765), and nothing regarding the JPEG thing.

MS has really screwed the pooch on this JPEG issue, since it had me update Office, and it did nothing to fix the security regarding MS appplications that render JPEGs for those with SP2 with Office 2000 through 2003.

Because the tools checks for other software on the system to see if it
needs update.
