No. It's global.

That must depend on the Win version. I can set Updates to only notify me and
let me choose when/if to download.
I keep it set at "download and let me install" though, so I can use the
Custom Install to see exactly what's going to be nistalled, plus tell it not
to offer it to me againi if I never want to see it again.

Yes. I'm set the same way, but it notifies you of all updates. Andy only
wants to be notified of security updates.

For some reason, it wants to install updates that have already been installed.

One of those mysteries and why I have a pen drive with Linux Puppy on it so I can repair Window's boofs. :)

Hmm, are you sure they finished installing? They can look like they
succeeded but end up not being installed after all. I just went through
that with two updates for dot-net, forget the versions. I just left them
there and eventually one of the updates "fixed" whatever the problem was,
and they installed OK. I think that was two updates earlier than this
week's.

Is you situation similar or does it keep offering a bunch of updates over
and over?

When you install the updates, using Custom Install lets you watch the
install and states a success or failure for each one.

Now if I could just get OE to show unread/read messages in newsgroups, I'd
be happy. Withing a few seconds of loading, they all turn to "read" status.
've checked and rechecked the settiings to no avail. Oh well!

Is there a way to get automatic update to only notify of security updates ?

Thanks.

Yeah, they keep offering many updates that I already have.

They are also wanting me to upgrade I.E. :)

I only use I.E. for updates.

I see no reason to install a newer version that is about 10 times the size of my current version.

I don't like all those index.dat files littering my hard drive.

You've changed the time period before marking as "read" in OE Tools,
Options, Read tab, top line?

yUP! And probably anything else you can think of. It works fine for emails,
just not newsgroups. I suspect I have file corruption but don't know where.
I've already uninstalled, cleaned up, and reinstalled IE and nothing changed
for OE.
Sorry; I think you have to consider that as a rhetorical statement. I've
already posted on this problem in its own thread; no joy but lots of good
suggestions, none of which worked, unfortunately.
