why does my pc automatically startup in the middle of the night for no reason
at all. Are there programs that can initiate a startup. Before shutting down
my pc, i disabled my modem so no traffic could enter just as a precaution,
but can anyone override this such as hackers? I have disabled automatic
updates and have no knowledge of any other programs updating. Can i find out
via the event manager which program or service has started up my pc?

If your PC is simply going into "StandBy", then there are many applications
that can bring it out of that mode, including Virus scanners, spyware
scanners, and backup programs.

If you are truly shutting down your computer, there are few applications
that can "turn it on" from being powered off. Check your system BIOS for
scheduled power on setting. Also make sure the "Wake on LAN" setting is
disabled in the BIOS and in the Adapter Configure properties for the DIAL-UP
Adapter.

Disable wake on lan and wake on modem in the bios. Disabling a modem in
windows has no effect if you're not in windows.
