Automatic Numbering Problem

When there are multiple numbered lists in one document, sometimes the
numbering will run on when you want it to start at 1 again. When I
right-click and select 'Restart Numbering' it seems to change the alignment
of the previous numbered list, and even if you reapply the style it still
doesn't fix it. Is there any reason that this happens? I have often wondered
if something in Tools/Options would stop this from happening but I can't seem
to see anything that looks relevant to change. Any help would be appreciated.
