Automatic detect settings (Proxy) behaves strangely

Some of our workstations dont get their proxyinfo via Automatic Detect Settings?

In some occasions we can fix it if we perform following (unclarified) sequence

-Tools > Internet Options > Advanced > Enable "Use HTTP 1.1 through proxy connections"
-Apply
-Tools > Internet Options > Connections > LAN Settings > Unmark "Automatic Detect Settings"
-OK
-OK
-Tools > Internet Options > Connections > LAN Settings >Mark "Automatic Detect Settings"
-OK
-OK

and then it works perfectly

Now and I can disable "Use HTTP 1.1 through proxy connections" again

We have a correct "wpad.dat" file located on "wpad.<our domain>"

It also works without the strange sequence above if I enable
Tools > Internet Options > Connections > LAN Settings > "Use Automatic configuration script"
and fill in the location of the "wpad.dat" file (wpad.<our domain>\wpad.dat) but this is not a workable sollution
because we have employees that travel between different offices which use different proxy settings.

Any propper solutions for this problem?
or a clarification for this behaviour?

thx in advance

Dave

Yes, but if it doesn't get this information from DNS or DHCP then it will
not know where the wpad.dat file is located.

Yes, this is because it doesn't know where the wpad.dat file is unless it
gets it from DNS or DHCP.

Only Win2000 and newer machines can do it with DHCP,...older machines can
only get it from DNS.

Remeber there are two parts to this:

1. Automatically finding the wpad.dat file (DNS or DHCP)
2. Automatically determining what proxy to use from the wpad.dat file (after
#1 happens)

I found a solution for the strange problem.

Just Delete following regkey
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Connections

Thx anyway for the help
