Well bummer!!! I have found that to be my favorite one so far.

Here is how it was described before this update...
"A new FREE Windows application for every computer user. No spyware of
any kind. All future upgrades are FREE.

Autoclip Express is designed for every computer user, from novice to
professional. Software engineers, web authors and others who work
extensively with the Windows clipboard will find Autoclip Express a great
time saving tool. With many free updates planned, you can make Autoclip
Express part of your permanent software toolkit.

Autoclip Express is genuine freeware. There are no time limits, nag
screens or disabled features. Development is financed by user donations."

I was even hosting the newest version to help the author with bandwidth.
When asked that is what he told me he would prefer. Now I'll remove the
listing :( Man, I hate that. Really kewl app.

To me, donationware is freeware. As long as the donations are not
DEMANDED or the software is crippled, it's still freeware - unless
you're a serious purist - which some people in this newsgroup are, of
course.

Sorry, not freeware; donationware :)

donationware = shareware if you decide to make a donation.
donationware = freeware if you decide not to make a donation.

So for 1/10000 people donationware = shareware.
For the rest (including you no doubt) donationware = freeware.

If I made the the app shareware I would get at least 1/100 paying.

Labeling an app as donationware simply allows the user to decide for
themselves, or would you prefer time limited shareware!

As long as there are no nag screens or restrictions I fail see how
this can be a problem for anyone! Personally I always make a donation
for freeware that I find useful, just to encourage the author to
produce more. I even contact authors and suggest they they should
invite donations.

I think from the software that I list as Freeware, I wouldn't be
considered a "purist"(at least not by the purists) ;). For me it is the
way it worded by the author. Most will say something like "donations
appreciated". But in this case the author is asking that a donation be
made, I wouldn't call it a *demand* but "Users are asked to make a small
donation if they find the program useful." is pushing the voluntary
envelope. imo

This is an issue that is tough for me...in some cases, with regards to
list ing them at FW4U or not. I have a lot of respect for software
authors, and particularly for those who generously offer their hard work
to the masses for free. I The author of Autoclip Express is talented and
has made a seriously excellent program. I don't blame him what so ever
for asking for donations. I likely would too. But, for me, the way in
which it is being asked makes it closer to *non-restricted* shareware.

This particular circumstance is border-line for me concerning if I do or
do not list it at my site. As far as using the tool, I highly recommend
it and indeed if you do like it please do donate to the author. I'm
already in hot water with the wife for donating to freeware authors. :)
Shes like...What? You say it's "free" but you *want* to send them money
anyway?! She understands though, but now after so many donations, the
understanding starts to wear thin. LOL (my prob., not yours)

Time to upgrade the wife? :)

If you want to see aggressive donation ware in action, you need look
no further than Dialog.

Hi Richard, Thanks for the excellent programs. Both look to be very high
quality and I know from personal use that Autoclip Express is very nice
and I have installed and looked at HyperExplorer which also is
impressive. Speaking only for myself, it is *how* the request for
donation is worded that seperates them from "Freeware". A seemingly
stupid, insignificant little thing. And it certainly doesn't prevent me
from trying the programs and if I like them and use them, sending a
donation.

I would love to list both products at FW4U as they are exactly the high
quality programs I seek for inclusion there. But, simply because of how
the donation request is worded, I feel compelled not to include them as
they don't fit *my particular definition* of "freeware".

Please don't take that as a criticism, as I've said, the programs are
very nice and the hard work is evident. It's just that there are
differing opinions on what is and is not truely freeware. :)

Sorry burnr, but I find your argument to be, to borrow a phrase from
your previous post, pushing the quibbling envelope. In fact, I think
it is a classic case of a distinction without a difference. I have
never used these particular programs, and in fact know nothing about
them or their author, but in general if a program is provided free of
charge, without being crippled or time limited, and contains no nags,
that's freeware to me, regardless of whether the author asks for,
pleads for, begs for, requests, hints at, or only vaguely suggests a
donation. I see no essential difference between "Users are asked to
make a small donation if they find the program useful" and "If you
really really like this program then sending a little something to
help defray expenses, while not at all necessary, would be immensely
appreciated, but only if you have the time and inclination, thank you
very much". I must tell you that, if this kind of hair-splitting keeps
good free programs from being listed on your site, then my confidence
in finding useful resources there is greatly diminished.

Hello Richard:

I didn't mean anything with pointing out the designation " Donationware."

Yes, you have provided the software with no nags, no limits and without
making any version " crippleware."

I have just tried " Autoclip Express " and have confirmed the above
results. BTW, a very nice and useful program :).

If I was a programmer and decided to offer my program(s) to the world, I
would also make an option for a donation.

With that said, this is a very nice piece of " Freeware / Donationware "
to have on your computer.

Thanks for making the program and allowing people to use it for free.

Richard speaking only for myself, not the newsgroup. I'm sorry if
people being rude will cause you to quit writing freeware. There are
some people out here that appreciate the work that you and all the other
freeware creaters do. I read this newsgroup to find out which freeware
is good and which to avoid. Yours is in the first group. Thank You.

If that is really so, I think he is too fast to conclude. His
was just "really" out for no more than a month. You usually
start to get some donations when your users start to "trust"
your product and become fans of your product. I always want
to donate to the freeware I love but unfortunately I have no
job (yet) for now. But when I have a job I would donate to
freeware I use and have been around for a while and hope that
it will continue to be freeware. I would be unlikely to
donate to a product I just start using for a few days, just my
own perference.

Check the website.

I checked the History, the first release was in May (its first
occurance in Snapfiles was no more than a month). Think about
other goodies that have been around for more than a year or
so: e.g., A43, Pimmy, Keynote, IrfanView, Xnews ..... If I
have money to donote, of course I will go to them first, they
have proven contributions to the field.
And my bet is that their downloads must have been more than a
few thousands.

If one really/truely intends to release a piece of
donationware in the very first place, hoping to get many
donations in 3 months is just not how it usually works. If an
authur really were thinking the concept of "donationware" in
terms of shareware, and evaluate how much time s/he spent to
develop a piece and how much should get back from monetary
donations, s/he would be doomed to be disappointed. One would
have been better off to just make it shareware for long term
anyway. It is not easy to really develop freeware, you have
to have the heart for it.

Very true.

The way RW has chosen to do it has cost him goodwill. I do like the
term 'sulkware' :)
