Auto Update Icon Gone

I am running Windows XP home edition, 1.6 processor, 512 RAM. Today I
started downloading critical updates using the Automatic Update icon in the
tray. I had to pause it when it was showing 11% complete. Now, when I want
to resume the update, there is no Automatic Update icon in the tray. I have
checked the Automatic Update tab in the Systems area, and it is correctly
checked. Can anyone help?

I am a bit mystified myself as to how the thing works, I do believe that I
did same said once, the icon just showed up eventually after a reboot.
Alternately if the icon dosn't show up in time (or after reboot), then goto
the automatic update site and click 'scan now'.

I have never been confident about Auto Update.

I much prefer to use Start >> Help and Support >> Windows
Update.

This way seems much more relaible.

(NB Turn off automatic updates in Control Panel >> System
