Auto Run actions.

I seem to remember long ago that there were actions for
different kinds of CD's in the "dvd/cd rom drives"
section of the device manager. Don't see them now -
are they some where else?

The reason I'm asking is because one of my drives,
after the CD is inserted, pops up an empty Notepad
windows with a box that says
"cannot find the readme.txt file -
Do you want to create a new file?"

It's happening on regular data CD's that I've burned,
no autorun stuff on them.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Dave

Hi Dave,
Quote from Windows Help & Support:

To change how your computer handles multimedia content

1.. Open My Computer.
2.. Under Devices with Removable Storage, right-click the device you want,
such as a digital camera or CD-ROM drive, and then click Properties.
3.. On the AutoPlay tab, click the multimedia content type you want to
change.
4.. Under Actions, click the action you want Windows to perform when it
detects the media type you selected.
Does this do what you're looking for??

Hello Curt,
thanks for reminding me where actions were.

However, for the five types I have listed,
Music files, pictures, video files, mixed content
and Music CD, each tab is set to
"prompt me each time to time to choose an action"

I chose "restore defaults" for each type,
and after that, "prompt me each time..."
was still selected for each type.
Notepad still opens when the disk is inserted...

Well I found out that this key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MountPoints2\E\Shell\AutoRun\command
had the data notepad readme.txt

This must be the problem, need to check it againt another system...

Thanks for the post, Dave. Last week I fixed a similar problem (opening network drives). It was the same MountPoints2\..\Autorun thing which caused the problem.

HA !
Great - I see experts-exchange updated their "look". It's been a
while since I stopped by.

Your diagnosis that malware could have been involved is
interesting.
Makes me wonder about my own system. I've been running without
virus protection for about 5 years, having got by with the occasional
online scan from F-secure or similar. I've got the SPI firewall
in the router, I don't use anything else.

I did download a malware solution a couple of weeks ago,
based on some advice in a news letter somewhere.
Can't remember who the company is, but the exe on my machine
is called nod32-nentenst.exe

Still, I'm getting off the subject.
Thanks for info!

Yes, a month ago. And the old look is removed also.
