auto numbering spread throughout a document

I have word 2007. I'm working on a process memo with numbered steps. The
steps are auto numbered.

Within this document also have a series of internal controls that are
numbered: "internal control 1.", "internal control 2." etc. Is there a way
for me to auto number "internal control" so that each time I have to add one
to my document it's automatically number and if I remove one it renumbers?
These internal controls appear throughout the document and do have a specific
formatting.

Does this make sense?

Thanks

Create a Style for this with the specific formating that you mention applied,
and include Numbering to this style which you can customise to add the
"Internal Control " (dont forgot the space) text before the numbering.
I don't have 2007 in front of me at the moment but hopefully this will point
you in the right direction.
Once you have created the style and if you need a lot of these appearing in
your document, you can also assign a Keyboard shortcut to the style so it
will be even quicker to apply. Check out "Assign a keyboard shortcut to a
style" in the Help.
All the best
