auto fill one field from another

Is it possible to do an auto-entry? For example, we have about seven courses
per year and each course date is assigned a specific number. Is there a way
to
have the course date number come up automatically once we have entered
the course date?

I would like this to fill automatically, rather than using a drop down or
look up option, if possible.

I am hoping that I can have the assigned number fill in automatically when
the course date is entered. I think I am going to have to do this with a
dropdown and defaut option, but it would be nice if it would work like an
auto fill.
