Auto delete temp files

Win XP Prof

C:\Documents and Settings\myname\Local Settings\Temp

In this temp folder, I have almost 600Mb of files and other stuff.
Can I delete it and can I set XP in such a way that it auto deletes these
files after a while?

I have set my temp files to point to C:\temp for no other reason than it's
easier to manage

create a folder in C:\ called temp then

goto
Start
Control Panel
System
Advanced
Environment Variables

you can set the User variables for temp and tmp to C:\temp also set the
system temp and tmp too to the same location.

If you want to auto clear this folder a simple logoff script can achieve
this

run the group policy editor by
start
run
gpedit.msc
click ok
then refer to

all TEMP & TMP files from time to time?

That's what I do, I just manually go in and delete them now and then.

Any of the files here can and should be deleted regularly. Do so after a
fresh restart. That way any files that were associated with a new program
install would run at boot up, and then can be deleted. If a file is in use,
the OS won't let you delete it.

A nice tool for deleting temp files and removing other junk is ccleaner. I
do not use it for cleaning the registry. I recommend against the use of
registry cleaners.

Yes, they can, and should be, deleted periodically.

The temp folder provides workspace for programs. Programs can create
temporary files there for their own temporary use. Each program should
delete all its temporary files when it closes, but for various reasons it
doesn't always happen (for example, if the program crashes, it never gets to
do this). That's why it's a good idea to periodically clean out anything
left there.

Also note that there are some program installations which work in two steps.
The first step concludes by writing temporary files and rebooting. The
second step starts automatically after rebooting and needs to find those
files there (and then deletes them when it's done).

Other than doing it automatically when rebooting (that would interfere with
installations like the kind I described), it's always safe to delete the
contents of the temp folder. Because it's safe to delete any temp files that
aren't open and in use by an application, and since Windows won't let you
delete open files, it's safe to (try to) delete them at any time. If any
fail to delete because they're open, they'll either be deleted automatically
when the app using them closes, or you'll get them the next time you delete
manually.
