There are 2 places to check for auto-archiving:

- The properties for a folder. This is the per-folder setting. Just
because the global option is enabled doesn't mean a particular folder
gets archived. You have to enable it on the folder to get that folder
archived.

- The global option (under Tools -> Options -> Other). If this is not
enabled, no folders get archived regardless of their settings. If
enabled, it is AND'ed with the archive setting on the folder.

The global option is like the master breaker at your circuit box to your
house. The light switch in a room is like the per-folder archive
property. If the master (global) switch isn't on, doesn't matter what
position the room light switches are in. With the master (global)
switch on, a room is still dark (not archived) if the switch for that
room is in the off position.

So check that the global option is turned off. Then archiving is
disabled for ALL folders. If you want to disable archiving for just one
folder, leave the global option on and disable archiving for the folder
in the properties for that folder.

"i have the auto archive box unchecked" doesn't say WHICH option is
unchecked, whether the global or per-folder setting.

in the place where you told me to go (under Tools -> Options -> Other). the
box that says run auto archive every( you put in a number) is unchecked,
which in turn makes all the other boxes in there unable to be checked or
unchecked. the default setting had some of them checked. should i go back and
check the box that says auto archive and then uncheck the other boxes, then
go back and uncheck auto archive. i just assumed that unchecing the run auto
archive box would stop it, but it hasnt.

Tis strange. If the global auto-archive option is disabled, no
archiving should ever get done. Doesn't matter what are states for the
greyed out checkboxes. Those affect the behavior or parameters of
archiving when it is turned on, but you have it turned off.

How do you know that archiving is still taking place?

So WHICH version of Outlook are you using?

i am using outlook 2003 we switched to that one because my 2007 was doing the
same thing. i knew it was archiving because my messages kept dissapearing on
me.so i searched through everything and found an auto archive button, thats
when i found out. at first i thought i was going crazy. my husband got a
book for 2003 and we found another way to disable it. we went to the inbox
folder and right clicked and diabled there too. so i hope it works. will be
watching daily to see if anything disapears.

So have you actually opened that archive .pst file to see if your mails
are getting moved into it? Use the File -> Open menu. Just because
mails are disappearing from the message store in Outlook doesn't mean
they are getting archived. That would be like me seeing my pile of gold
coins was dwindling and just assuming that the gold fairy was moving
them into glass jars buried in my backyard.

If Outlook is performing an archive operation, you will see a notice of
it displayed at the right side of the status bar at the bottom of the
window. If mails are disappearing but they aren't showing up in the
archive .pst file then perhaps you have a view applied to the folder(s)
that hides mails over N days old. They haven't been moved anywhere.
They've just been hidden in your view.

under the tools and options folder it says a folder name where the stuff is
going, evidenttly auto archiving is a default option we didnt know about
before. we went to the folder where it said they were, but we are unable to
open it, keeps telling us to choose and option to open, but we cant.

Another thought: Make sure your Inbox doesn't have any filters set on it
that might be hiding messages that have already been read. Also go into the
Rules Wizard and make sure you have no rules set up that may be moving
messages to other folders.

BTW, Vanguard told you how to open your archive.pst file. You have to open
it from within Outlook. Go to File, Open, Outlook Data File, and browse to
it.

Auto-archiving is never enabled by default. When you install Outlook,
the global auto-archiving option is disabled and no folder has
auto-archiving enabled. All the settings are off. The default path
listed under the global archiving panel is just a default *if* you
choose to enable auto-archiving.

If you try to open the archive .pst file and get an error, maybe that's
because there is no such file. Again, the default listed is just the
default used *if* auto-archving gets enabled. If auto-archiving has not
been enabled, or if no items have yet met the criteria to get archived,
the archive .pst file has not yet been created. You can't open a file
that doesn't exist.

So, have you checked your view(s) yet to see if they are hiding items
over N days old?

What happens when you try to open the archive.pst file? Do you get any error
messages?

I have yet to see jacki say that she has actually checked the view on
the Inbox. She keeps checking rules and is fixated on auto-archiving
and has yet to check if the view on her Inbox will hide messages over 7
days old. Until jacki actually checks her view and looks at its
settings, I gave up because she is not doing the auto-archiving she
claims is happening.
