I was having audio issue with my new motherboard with XP - Asus p5p800.
So on the advice from this board, I bougth a cheap PCI audio card. It
came with a CD with no explanation of which of the 8 folders had the
correct driver. In any event, after installing it - XP doesn't boot.
I then tested the sound card in my ME (dual boot with XP) and it work
fine. So I am at a loss why this isn't going. I have disabled the
CMOS audio codecs and integrated sound, but it won't boot with XP. I
get past the opening XP screen and then it blacks on me. It does boot
in Safe mode and doesn't give me any "!" yellow exclamation in the
sound area, but it does continue to load a MULTIMEDIA controller and an
SM BUS controller which I don't seem to have drivers for. Any ideas
about all of this? Thanks

Try putting the card in a different slot.
