audio device will not start code 10

Upon fresh install of xp pro, I am getting an error of the above. I have
enabled the audio in the bios, my sndvol.exe will not expand, my volume
control icon is not on the taskbar and when I try to install it ; says I have
no audio device. Control panel shows no audio device installed.
I have re-installed the c97 drivers from the internet and the M10 microsoft
audio controller driver from windows update.
My sound is on board and just worked 3 days ago with another hard drive,
that crashed, now a brand new hard drive, new install of windows..
now what?

When you go to device manager, do you notice any devices that have an
exclamation mark next to it (or a red x, but I doubt you manually
disabled it).

MPU 401 Compatible MIDI Device

Realtek AC97 Audio
SIS 7018 audio driver
both have yellow explanation points, I can disable them and have tried that
.. i also tried to reinstall the driver, back up the driver, uninstall then
reinstall.

I do notice now that the MPU 401 compatible MIDI device used to have a
yellow mark also ,but when I installed the 7018 it went OK

I just installed more audio drivers to get this to work.

Should I delete somthing in this area?

You might want to uninstall one or some of the devices with an
exclamation mark next to it, restart the computer, and see if Windows
finds them and installs them correctly from the start. If you restart
and notice Windows finds new hardware, try to install specific
location (the cd with the device's drivers on it) using the wizard.
Also check device manager as soon as restart has finished and see if
devices show up again, and again with exclamation marks, this will
mean that the hardware does exist, but it just doesn't have the
correct software for it. In this case, uninstall them again and
install software for your audio device from cd before restarting
computer, then perform another restart.

I already tried that procedure and nothing changes....why won't the
sndvol.exe expand as per microsoft knowledge base article?

Go to Microsoft Updates and see if there is a driver for media control
device (or any other optional hardware drivers). This fixed my issues
when I went through what you are going through.

Oh, and make sure your speakers are on and plugged in! Ha ha. That
would suck.
