ATI MMC folders

I have a folder C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application
Data\ATI MMC that shows a file count of 60 with 10.8Gigs when I view
properties but it only shows 20 files of 17.5 MB. Does anyone have any idea
what is going on?

Thanks.

Do you have the options to show hidden files and show system files turned on?

Hidden files, the data is likely time shift data and/or Recorded Movies and
Audio from viewing ATI TV and/or ATI Radio. If you were to reconfigure where
ATI's software would save its data (say for instance you'd send Time shift
to a HHD "D"), you'd notice a decrease in the size of the ATI MMC folder on
drive C.

I should warn you, if you change your settings, (allowing you so see the
folder and files inside the MMC folder) you should not manually add files or
folders to the directory as anything added will become instantly corrupted
and undeletable. The only way to fix this once it occurs is to repartition
and reformat the drive.

Thanks for the reply men. I knew I can to the right place.

I have settings to view hidden and system files and folders and there
still seems to be a discrepancy of 10 Gigs somewhere if this is indeed a
true count. Is it ok if I remove these files as they are video and audio
files. I have an ATI 9600 in one machine that has nothing in either of the
two MMC folders. One is a duplicate for some reason. The system that has all
the files is running a Theater 550 Pro and a Radeon X850XT PCI-E.
Everything works fine as usual with all my ATI products but for the main
issue of those missing Gigs.

Thanks again.

You also need to uncheck "Hide protected operating system
files(recommended)".

I clean out the folder regularly when sure theirs nothing to be saved.

I have settings to view system files and folders. I wonder if I can move
the folder to another drive and create a new one to replace it. I sure would
like to get back 10 gigs if I can. I did notice there were two folders with
that name on another system.

You sure can. You have direct it where to go.

Go into ATI TV Setup "Digital Video Recorder", click on "Disk Space" and
select the drive you want, check the "Always Record to Temporary Drive" box.

I moved some files in C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application
Data\ATI MMC folder but TV would not stay running. I undid move but that
did nothing to help. I ran System Restore and all is fine. All but that
missing 10 Gigs.

I don't think you can move the files. I saved the whole files and the
folders structure from way back when using 9.03 to disc. If just the files
were replaced it wouldn't work but replacing the whole structure would.
Restoring the structure to another location wouldn't work either Just let
MMC create the structure where you want it. Delete them form where you
don't.

Do a search for *.vcr or *.* with a file size >300MB just in case they got
stored someplace your not looking. I think some of my recordings went to My
Documents with newer versions of MMC before I changed the path.

If you have all the correct attributes set in folder options and can't see
the files that comprise the 10GB it's time to run Scandisk.

I first renamed the folder and created a new one to see what happened.
Everything seemed to work fine so I moved the folder to another System. I
moved the files to another folder and now I have an empty folder that shows
10.8 gigs on another machine that is set to show hidden files and System
folder. I was going to delete it but this little thing has put up such a
fight I might just keep it.

I first thought ScanDisk would reset the count that was wrongly showing the
size of this folder but I guess this is not the case as by moving the file
showed. ScanDisk showed 0 bad sectors.

Problem solved but I learned very little.

Hide protected operating system files(recommended) unchecked?

Yes. The machine I moved it to always has the hidden files and System
folders viewable. I decided to delete it and gained 10.8 Gigs. I even saw
the warning about it not going to the bin because it was to large. I guess I
will never know what caused this condition. I do wonder about all my folders
now. I wonder if there is a program that can scan folders and file counts
that can check something like this.

"Hide protected operating system files" isn't the same as "hidden files and
System
folders viewable" Can't imagine why you wouldn't be able to see it if they
are properly set. Guess it's not a problem as long as you got the space
back.

Just how are you supposed to clean out that MMC folder anyway? Is there a
maintenance application that takes care of that?

Just select everything in the folder and delete them.

I was advised to stay clear of that location and I can see with it being in
that hidden directory that is was not meant to be user accessed. I was
browsing folders looking for unnecessarily large files and I stumbled on
this 10 Gigs. I would think there would be an ATI utility or other
references to the MMC folder location.

Had a situation with one version of MMC where one of the files would become
corrupt occasionally and had to empty the folder or MMC would crash when it
ran. It won't hurt anything to delete them except if something is there you
don't really want to lose. Convert anything that's to be kept to another
format in another folder with Library. Or move it if it is already in a non
ATI specific format(VCR). Often wondered if they did it this way for future
DRM use.

Windows has a lot of functions to protect its self from people who will
click on things just to see what happens even if they don't have the
foggiest notion what they are doing. I've deleted them many times and the
folder too. MMC just rebuilds them.

Library has a delete function but it never made sense to me. I'd rather do
it manually. The CatUninstaller will remove them..............and everything
else ATI ;^).

I never really use or even know about most of the functions and features
of all the different ATI cards I have and have had. I just enjoy knowing I
have them just in case. ATI is the best as far as I can tell.

Thanks for the help.

The problem with the ATI MMC folder is one of security. When it's created, all security rights are removed, meaning no one, not even an administrator, can delete, change or modify it. To fix this log on as an Administrator (or administrator account), right-click on the ATI MMC folder, then click Properties. Click the Security tab. Assign Full Control to the 'Everybody' users. Make sure the assign to folder, sub-folders and files is selected, then click OK. You can now delete that folder and all of its contents.

If you run the ATI Multi-Media Center again, it will recreate this folder, but you now know how to get rid of it if you need to.
