Another bump in the road.

w2ksp4_en opens up to drive e, the 160 gb drive. How do I get it to open up
to drive c:, the drive where windows 2000 is located.

Makes no difference where it extracts to.

Install stops at "Installing file MSASN1.DLL." Error message reads "Copy Error
Setup cannot copy the file msasn1.dll."

Ensure that the location specified below is correct, or change it and insert
'Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 Source Files' in the drive you specify.

The info in the dropdown window reads as follows:
"e:\5\i386"

I don't what all this means and don't know where to go next.

This time I am really stuck.

Help.

Try installing from safe mode. Also you may need to disable your AV
software.

The question is -- what is drive "E:" and why is the Service pack trying to extract there ?
The executable should be extracting to drive "C:".

I don't remember where I saw this but it seems like the service pack
extractor looks for where the most available space is. But IIRC you can
override this and choose and or browse to another location. Also seems like
you can execute the sp's EXE with the /x switch appended to extract only.

Well guys, I've had it for tonight. Gremlins win. I'll try again another day.

Shut down the install of SP4 and now Professional will not boot to desktop.
Error message. "Isass.exe - Unable to Locate DLL"

The dynamic link library MASAN1.DLL cound not be found in the specified path
C;\WINNT\system32; C:\WINT\System32, etc.

This is my error and now I need to figure out how to correct it. I do not
have an emergency boot disk because I had not reached the point where I
thought I needed to install one.

So, what next? Do I completely reinstall Windows 2000 and start all over
again? Truly stuck.

You ask what difference and why is drive E a problem?

Answer: Drive is the 160GB drive I just installed. There is nothing on it
and I can't copy anything to it. You told me I had difficulty because I
needed to install the Service Packs. That's when I worked with SP4.

I don't want SP4 to extract to Drive E because it will encounter difficulty
until SP4 is installed. That's my understanding from the tread of posts, up
to this point.

I want the extract to go to Drive C:, the place where my windows is installed.

Now that my machine is jammed and I can't take a next step, I need to learn
what my next step should be. How do I correct my error when I don't have an
emergency boot disk?

Truly, truly stuck and very tired.

I will check back tomorrow night.

Goodnight guys and thanks for your help.

That's logical.

I look at it thusly -- If the 48bit LBA patch is not installed and SP4 is not yet installed
then the use of the 160GB hard disk would still be problematic.

I believe a PC should be reduced to the core components during the OS installation and after
the OS Kernel has been fully updated, periphery can be added.

Disable the 160GB drive. Literally, remove the power cable from the drive. the only drives
should be a possible "A:" floppy, the OS boot drive "C:" and a CD/DVD drive "D:". All other
drives should be disabled/disconnected until the OS is completely installed and all service
packs and HotFixes are installed. Then, once complete, you can enable/reconnect other
drives.

I agree. Seems strange about the 160 gB drive though, It must be
partitioned, formatted and drive letter assigned in order for the sp
extractor to have found it.

Sound advice. May need to also change the drive jumpers.

After I locate an emergency boot disk, I will disconnect the 160GB drive and
keep others (C: & D:) in tact. I will then try to install the Service Pack 4
again.

The problematic E: drive is jumpered as a slave. It is installed as a
Primary Slave on the same cable as the C: drive. Had to do it this way
because nothing else worked.

My preference is to install the E: drive as a secondary master on the same
cable as I install the CD, as a secondary slave. I prefer this arrangement
because both would be connected to the ATA 133 controller card.

My C: & D: drives are 120GB drives and i know that neither needs a
controller card. Both will work fine with C as a Prmary Master and D as a
Primary Slave.

Next step, find an emergency boot disk.

Thanks

Dave L & Dave P,

What the E Drive? I don't know the answer and I can assure you that all
drive have more than enough space to install SP4. My C Drive has over 30GB
of avail space and my D drive has about the same.

The remaining, open question, is whether I will hit this same bump in the
road once I disconnect the E Drive, reboot with the Embergency Boot Disk and
install the SP4 again? Does your read of the error message tell you that
something else is the problem?

The 160GB drive is installed, with one partition and assigned the drive
letter E:. It is also formatted. Still don't understand why the SP4
extraction picks the E Drive when there are two others to choose and decline.
Everything I install goes to C; drive first.

There is no step in the extraction where I can select where to extract SP4.
The extraction and installation occur automatically. It would be easy if I
was given a choice before the extraction starts.

Then the 160 gB drive probably wasn't an issue. Having to abort the SP4
install once may have been the cause.

No no no. You guys are all over the place here. OP's problem is that Win
2000 does not support LBA until SP 3. He is installing his large drive
prematurely and when SP 4 downloader goes to use it data is being corrupted.
Best bet now, IMHO, is to download SP 4 network ver, save it offline,
disconnect his large drive and start over. Install Win 2000, update to SP
4, make LBA registry change and then install and partition the large drive.
Bet it works.

Yes, yes...

You didn't read the whole thread, If you did you would have seen that I indicated about
48bit LBA very early on and I also suggested the drive be disconnect until Win2K SP4 and all
other patches are installed.
