~ at the beginning of a file name

I've seen a ~ and a file name created when I edit a word document. As I
recall, sometimes that "file" goes away and sometimes it doesn't. In any
case, I'm curious to know the function of this file.

Thanks in advance,

Probably the "owner" file. See “Description of how Word creates temporary
filesâ€
