Asus P4C800-E Deluxe MoBo

Hi Terry M.,

The message about no device BIOS not install is for SATA. If you have
connected the drive, as I mentioned in...

<[email protected]>

...then go into BIOS...

Advance/Onboard Devices Configuration/Onboard Promise Controller/Disabled

...and that will turn off SATA and the message. It doesn't effect PATA.

Are you running RAID? I do not believe you mentioned that before. I was
under the impression that it was previously an old Gateway drive on a
Promise controller. That doesn't automatically mean RAID. If you want RAID,
then you will have to set that up.

Yep, having power to the board is important. <g>

Yepper - power to the CPU make a BIG improvement!

First off I did a repair of XP and all seems well with the exception
of the cd-roms. I have a cd/dvd as the d drive and a burner as the e
drive.

I try to make the D the primary and the E the secondary.

It doesn't recognize the D drive or the E drive when hooked up as they
should be. If I disconnect the D drive and put the E drive as primary
all seems well. Early on when I was trying to boot from the D drive
it wouldn't work either.

On a side note the tech support at Asus leaves a lot to be desired. On
hold for 1/2 hour to hear them say it must be anything but their
problem. This happened three times. More help here hands down!

Any other suggestions guys - I do appreciate all the assistance.

Another noob de-lurks - - -
Just learning the hands on experience with this board - Intel's price
drops made me take the plunge.

My first boot - set up for least faults - was an 80 G hard drive, set
as master on the primary IDE , CD Burner on secondary IDE master and
a DVD reader on secondary IDE slave. These are on the pair of IDE
connectors up by the floppy connector.

I used the black cables that came with the board, the 80 pin cable for
the hard drive and 40 pin cable for the optical drives. The first boot
prompted me to visit the BIOS, where I chose the CD ROM as first
device to boot and the 80g hd as second. Before saving and exiting I
put the WinXP CD in, and restarted. Went like a breeze.

After the OS was installed and most parts were functioning, I plugged
in the hard drive that had all my data from the last computer - a 5400
RPM 120g - into the IDE Primary Raid socket. That's the blue IDE plug
that faces sideways. I did have to re-visit the BIOS to tell it I was
simply using it as a plain old additional hard drive and not a RAID
set up.

All's well this weekend so far.

P4C800E Deluxe
Pentium 4, 3.0G
1 G (2x512) RAM
ATI 9800 PRo
Antec Truepower 450 PSU
Soundblaster Audigy Platinum
TDK CD Burner
LiteOn DVD reader

and that lowly 80g hard drive. Everything in the list but the Mboard,
CPU & RAM came out of the old computer - P3 850 on an Abit BE6 II.

Hook up speaker/headphone to audio/out and listen to an error message.
The board doesn't beep but speaks!

Well... everything is up and running now! Turns out I had a defective
40 pin cable for the cd roms. It would work with either hooked up but
not both at the same time. It was a brand new cable too!

It has been an experience that I don't care to go through again for
sometime to come!

Thanks everyone for all the help!

If I had to rely on Asus tech help I'd still be with out a computer.

Terry
