ASUS P4B533

Hello.
I possess an Asus P4B533 motherboard and I'd like to expand the system
memory up to 2 GB.
I would like to use 2 modules of 1GB each. I know that my motherboard
supports PC2100 memory (266MHz) and I'd like to know which kind of memory I
need.
Double sided?
Single sided?
Would my MoBo support 2 modules of double sided ram?
Is there any configuration known to work for sure?
I have read the user guide but it's not very clear.
Can anybody help me, please?

Thanks.

These support a total of 4 sides of RAM. Therefore you can use two
modules of double-sided, but then you cannot put anything in the third
DIMM slot.

Your motherboard has drive for four banks. Looking at the table
in the manual, it can take two double sided modules in slot 1
and slot 2, while leaving slot 3 blank.

1GB modules are only available double sided, so single sided
modules are not an option right now, at that size.

Of the products mentioned, I would personally buy the CT12864Z40B,
which is CAS3 at DDR400. DDR400 memory is backward compatible at
DDR266, and when slowed to DDR266, you can set CAS to CAS2. That
makes the CT12864Z40B the fastest module for your purposes. Since
the modules are all relatively close in price, that would be
my preferred choice. (Also, the DDR400 on the label, will increase
the resale price later.)

As for how happy your board is with 1GB modules, you'll have to
Google for that.

Note - in any case, do not buy "stacked" RAM. Note the pricing
difference between 128Mx4 chips and 64Mx8 chips in the sample
advert below. I cannot think of a situation where I would suggest
the 128Mx4 variety, and the Crucial above will be 64Mx8 (AFAIK,
only the generic makers of RAM, use that 128Mx4 stuff).

Thank you very much for your help.
You have explained me a lot of things.
Do u think I could use this memory?

It's cheaper...

I was forgetting.
I tried one double sided bank of 512 MB with two 256 MB banks, and system
didn't boot up.
So I think I can't use this configuration.
Also I tried two double sided modules (one of 1 GB and the other of 512 MB)
of pc 2700 but the 1GB module was detected as a 512 MB one.
How is it possible?

Ok, I'll try.

Thanks again.

Note the words in that advert - "high density" !!!

That kind of memory is only trouble. It is cheap
for a reason - it can only be used on a restricted
set of chipsets.

If you look at the text description on this advertisement,
you can see how they carefully list the chipsets that
the "high density" 128Mx4 type chips can work with.

http://www.portatech.com/catalog/memory.asp?ID=285

Your Ebay advert also lists the allowed chipsets for the
128Mx4 chips. The chipsets are made by VIA and SIS. Intel
chipsets, like your 845E, are not listed. You should
use the "low density" 1GB modules based on 64Mx8 chips.
The 64Mx8 chips will work with more chipsets than the
cheap 128Mx4 will.

If you want good memory, spend some money. If you wish
to experiment with cheap memory, buy it from a local
store that has a liberal return policy. I would not
buy DIMMs with 128Mx4 chips on it, even if I did own
a VIA or SIS chipset!
