ASUS, No sound Max present after repeated installs

I use Windows XP Pro, a number of harddrives, the ASUS PAP800 Motherboard
with built-in Sound Max soundboard.

It went out after I installed a backup program (which works fine) and
re-installing the ASUS SoundMax software , deleting it and re-installing it
does not broing the sound back.

The device manager does not see a sounddevice.

Injecting the speakers and taking them out of the sound output slot does not
change anything either.

Any other ideas?

Delete at post and check if it's enabled in bios.

It might be disabled in the bios. Else the sound chip died (i've seen
it happen).

If it's the latter, just put a seperate card in, or if you dont care
about sound, leave it be. I don't start to worry abuut motherboards
until a second component fails, or capaictors start bulging.

Got same problem latelty with Asus board. Turns out that I had to install
SP2 to have it properly configured.

It was enabled at BIOS.
After DAYS of trying things I went to RESTORE in WindowsXP and got sound
back.

Cannot see what changed, other than sound is back.
